World Room (Japanese language class)

About World Room

Children and grand children of Japanese orphans left behind in Chinacame to JOKO Junior High School in the 1980’s because their families had settled in this area. They needed to be supported in terms of Japanese language and life adjustment. In 1997, a specialized Japanese teacher was placed in our school for their assistance upon strong request of teachers and PTA (parent-teacher-association).
Initially the class was called Japanese language Class; however, the name was changed to World Room by increasing students who are from many different countries. Since then, students develop an understanding of different cultures and values through many school activities and friendships.
The number of people from other countries has been increasing in Japan. Four junior high schools and eleven elementary schools in Fukuokacity currently have world rooms or Japanese language classes. Also, there are twenty three specialized Japanese teachers in those schools.

What we do

Students who need academic assistance because of their language difficulties and different educational back grounds are supported by a world room teacher. For instance,
they learn initial Japanese language individually and study subjects with a teacher in a classroom. Also, a world room teacher supports them as they and their guardians get used to Japanese school life

Chinese language and Korean language clubs

Students are able to learn those languages by teachers, who are native speakers

Message

Welcome to Joko Junior High School
Our school has been for more than 30 years. This area was in the sea around 40 years ago. The plan of massive land reclamation was carried out because of rising population in Higashi ward. Soon after Shirohama Elementary Schooland Kashiihama Elementary Schoolwere established, then Joko Junior High School was established in 1984.  At that time, there were 17 classes and 692 students; however, currently the number of the student is dwindling because of falling birth rate and the aging population.

Our school has World Room which is for students who are related to other countries, and is active in the area of global education. At the same time, it takes a proactive stance on participation in community events and activities. This is the main pillar of our education as “GLOCAL JOKO”.
